It’s that time of year when I get a little bit nervous about flu season. I’ve seen several colds come through the studio over the past two weeks, and you better believe I am diffusing every day at home AND in the studio. Several people have asked me about essential oils in the last few weeks so I decided to write about it for you.
Before telling you how you can use essential oils to survive this season, it’s good to get familiar with three categories of oils.
Immuno-Modulating Essential Oils (these stimulate immune function throughout the body): Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Tea Tree
Preventative Essential Oils (these oils are recognized for their anti-microbial abilities): Lavender, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lemon, Lemongrass, Cinnamon, Clove Bud, Grapefruit, Sandalwood, Thyme (white), Peppermint, Sage
Depurative Essential Oils (these can be used to help remove pathogens and other toxins from the body and speed the healing process after an illness): Cypress, Ginger, Grapefruit, Lemon, Rosemary
Here are a couple of ways I like to use my oils during cold and flu season:
Homemade Chest Rub:
- 1/4 oz. Organic Beeswax
- 1/4 cup Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
- 10 Drops Eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops Wintergrteen essential oil
(Gently melt the beeswax and coconut oil in a double boiler. Remove from heat, allow it to slightly cool, then stir in essential oils. Store in a small glass container. Apply it to bottoms of feet and chest.)
Lavender + Lemon + Peppermint Roller Bottle
Fill a roller bottle almost to the top with your favorite carrier oil. Add 2 drops of each, Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint essential oils to maintain clear breathing. I’d also like to add that I diffuse this recipe all the time (minus the carrier oil) during allergy season! Frankincense and Thieves are absolute must-haves for me. I frequently use roller bottles to create my own blends. You can order the bottles from a number of places online, but I have personally had great luck with Life Publishing and Amazon. I do prefer the metal roller balls over plastic.
I keep Thieves Hand Purifier and Spray on me at all times. I panicked this weekend at my son’s soccer games (two games back to back) when I had to use the Porta-Jon that had not been emptied in over a month, and yes the dates were written in front of me. When a girl has to go she has to go, and you better believe I was spraying Thieves all over myself. Ha! I am not joking.
